Asia has always been an area of concern for American security. With China’s power continually increasing, it may come as no surprise that Obama is moving to limit this ever expanding influence. His most recent initiative sees American troops stationed in Darwin, in the north of Australia, in order to maintain a presence in an area that is ‘critical to all our economies’.
Changing relations in the region are evident, not least in the case of America’s old enemy Vietnam, fast becoming an important ally in the competition between the US and China.
Asia is an increasingly important region, and certainly one that should not be ignored. The issues that face these regions will almost certainly have an effect on the rest of the world, as the balance of global power shifts. It therefore cannot be ignored and must be considered in all discussions of security and international relations.
