Lone Star Tarnished, Jillson’s latest title, is yet another valuable contribution to the study of US policy making. Focusing on Texas, this excellent new textbook looks at the red state’s differences, and how they provide constant challenges for US public policy making, and critically examines the resulting ‘Texas Model’.
Previous texts include American Government: Political Development and Institutional Change, 6th edition; Pursuing the American Dream: Opportunity and Exclusion Over Four Centuries; and Pathways to Democracy: The Political Economy of Democratic Transition. Jillson has been praised for the content and accessible style of his work, which allows students to get a firm grasp of the subject matter. This approach is complemented by his extensive knowledge of American politics, making these hugely popular teaching tools for a wide range of courses.
Jillson has been teaching American politics since 1976, earning his PhD in government and politics from the University of Maryland in 1979. He is a member of the Council on Foreign Relations and was chair of the SMU Political Science Department from 1996 to 2001, as well as directing the Tower Center for Political Studies.
