Thomas Mathiesen, Professor emeritus of sociology of law in Oslo, and author of the upcoming Routledge Revivals reissue The Defences of the Weak: A Sociological Study of a Norwegian Correctional Institution, recently attended the conference 'Perspectives on Content and Frames of the Prison’.
The conference, co-organized by Mathiesen in association with KROM - The Norwegian Association for Penal Reform, took place in Norway from the 12th to the 15th of January. With around 170 participants over the four days - including lawyers, criminologists, doctors, social workers, prisoners and ex-prisoners - the conference investigated such themes as sentencing and the treatment of prisoners; themes which emerged from the in depth studies of prisons Mathiesen undertook in his writing of The Defences of the Weak.
