James Arthur's research and writing cover a wide spectrum of areas, including both professional learning and theoretical texts, on education policy, virtues, social literacy, history, citizenship, religion and communitarian theory. His early research work and first book focused on faith schools and he continues to lead and organize conferences in this area at St. George's House, Windsor Castle as well as publishing important texts in the area - the most recent for Routledge in 2006 is Faith and Secularisation in Religious Colleges and Universities. Recently, the Archbishop of Canterbury launched his edited collection on Christian Leadership in Higher Education which he co-edited with Michael Wright, his former Vice Chancellor in Canterbury. James has also organized and led a number of conferences for the Council of Church Colleges and Universities and represented the research interests of this association on a HEFCE statutory committee. He was appointed the first Director of the National Institute for Christian Education Research 2005-2009 and his educational biography of John Henry Newman (Continuum) was launched in 2009 by Archbishop Vincent Nicholls.
James is also involved in developing new strategies at the University of Birmingham for enhanced public and civic engagement and is piloting an innovative student volunteering program in the City of Birmingham with students from the University. He believes that a university education must prepare its students for lives of significance and responsibility and that all university academics must demonstrate a commitment to public and civic service.
