In November 2008 John Hattie’s eagerly awaited book Visible Learning was published by Routledge Education. This unique and ground-breaking book was the result of 15 years research and synthesises over 800 meta-analyses on the influences on achievement in school-aged students. It built a story about the power of teachers, feedback, and a model of learning and understanding. The research involved many millions of students and represents the largest ever evidence based research into what actually works in schools to improve learning. Areas covered include the influence of the student, home, school, curriculums, teacher, and teaching strategies.
Visible Learning received stunning reviews across the board. The Times Educational Supplement went as far as to say that with its meticulous and expansive global research Visible Learning might ‘reveal teaching's Holy Grail.’ – a final answer perhaps to what actually works to improve learning outcomes.
For his most recent project, John has collaborated with Richard Fletcher (a Senior Lecturer in the School of Psychology at Massey University, New Zealand) to produce Intelligence and Intelligence Testing due to be published by Routledge Education in March 2011. This book examines the controversial psychological construct that is IQ, discussing and reviewing the history and current status of the research on intelligence and providing an overview of its development, measurement and use.
